Our client is the largest privately owned forensic science service provider in the UK. Serving the police and crime enforcement agencies, we also have an increasing number of private sector clients

Summary Aims:

- Provide electronic engineering resource for forensic science product development.

- Particular emphasis on electronics system design, instrument performance design, thermal control and power management.

- Interfaces with the mechanical and software engineering teams.

This role helps to deliver instrumentation capable of fully exploiting novel chemistry enabling rapid DNA fingerprinting. The products developed will target field measurements requiring portability, remote communications with a central database and a high level of robustness and reliability.

The detection mechanism uses both thermal scanning and photometric fluorescence. It is important that design of the instrumentation fits with already developed sampling and chemistry to encompass and extend its utility.

These products combine exciting new scientific methodology with the need to make a fast, high fidelity measurement in a practical manner. Robustness and simple user interactions are key.

Position Responsibilities:

- Electronics engineering from product concept through to customer delivery.

- Specification, design, electronics CAD, simulation/modelling, prototyping, test and evaluation.

- Apply electronics and firmware engineering knowledge and proven skills in electronics systems design to produce products that meet performance specifications, quality requirements and cost targets that are introduced to the market place on time.

Be involved at all stages of the product development process, for example:-

- To work with other members of the product development team to translate product requirements into engineering product specifications.

- To conduct technical reviews during the development of new products.

- To develop good relationships with our suppliers and ensure smooth transition into manufacturing.

- To support and trouble shoot the introduction of new products and in particular pilot batches released to initial customers.

- To provide post-shipment technical support.

Experience Required:

- Electronics system analysis and design in the instrumentation or sensors field.

- Low noise amplification, ADCs and data handling.

- Programmable devices such as PICs, CPLDs. Control circuitry.

- Low power electronics designs; thermal control of samples and sample analysis involving variable temperature - requires careful power management.

- Communications; instrument will require remote communication with host, plus very simple and robust user interfaces.

- Electronic CAD systems; such as OrCAD, Mentor Graphics.

Advantageous Experience:

- Some experience in wider requirements of thermal and optical engineering.

- Some firmware knowledge. Software knowledge such as C, C++, .NET.

- An understanding of life-science or forensic science techniques.
